Val is working hard to produce a number of large sculptures with evocative surfaces and boats balancing on the edge of abstract forms.
"Within my work I attempt to capture a perception of
space, movement and the atmosphere of the sea and its coastline. Through a
number of sporting disciplines I take part in and experience a sense of energy
and excitement as well as danger. It is from these personnel challenges that I
find inspiration for my ideas."

John Ritchie - working for BA show.
John is currently making sculpture inspired by derelict chapels and buildings. He is also involved in creating complex ceramic surfaces with glaze and ceramic Decals.
"I create abstract sculptural ceramics that are
inspired by either the urban or the rural landscape. In my work I look to
obscure the obvious, with the intention of intriguing the viewer and inviting
closer inspection. The idea of contrast is an important sub-plot of my work.
My latest work combines mouldings copied from derelict
buildings together with photographic images to create sculptural pieces that
are designed to highlight both the number of decaying that are allowed to fall
into ruin while there is a reported housing shortage and the gradual loss of
the traditional skills used in the construction of these building."

"My current work is inspired by
a series of meditative walks, during which I observe and contemplate my natural
surroundings and how we as people interact with them. Considering not only the physical
but also the philosophical nature of life. The vessels draw these concepts,
thoughts and discoveries together."

course philosophy is driven by learning, though making underpinned by curiosity
and creativity. Students will be taught by a team of highly motivated,
experienced academic and technical staff. The teaching aims to foster
creativity and individuality through `hands-on' skills based teaching. Students

study that incorporates an extensive range of making processes with ceramic,
fine metal, glass and mixed media, combining traditional and digital
technologies. In the second year they are able to specialise in
either ceramics or jewellery or
continue a combined creative practice using mixed media. Students will also

international contemporary art, applied art and design, its contexts and
markets. Professional practice and enterprise skills teaching will prepare

also offer individuals an opportunity to create work in a bilingual context and

enabling people to work confidently and professionally within the context of
ceramics, jewellery and
3D art and design. The School of Art, Film and Media provides a friendly and
supportive environment for students to explore their options and develop their
individual style and potential.
